Former Chesterfield, Leicester City & Stoke City footballer. Capped 73 times for England. A member of the 1966 World Cupwinning team. One of the Worlds greatest Goalkeepers.

Gordon joined a local team Millspaugh and then played for Rawmarsh Welfare before returning to Millspaugh where his ability was spotted by a scout from Chesterfield and in 1955 signed as a part- time pro for £2 a match. In 1956 with the help of Banks, Chesterfield reached the FA Youth Cup Final. In total he played 510 football league matches. At Chesterfield in 1958, he made 23 appearances. At Leicester City from 1959-1966, he made 293 appearances and at Stoke City from 1966-1972, he made 194 appearances. He was awarded the OBE in 1970, two years before his English career ended.

After a car accident in 1972, Banks fought back, going on to play in the American league for Fort Lauderdale Strikers, he was voted NASL goalkeeper of the year in 1977.

He is now a popular speaker on the after dinner circuit with his football anecdotes and memories from a fantastic career as a professional footballer.Back to Speakers
