Peter Taylor

Peter started his footballing career with Southend United and was then signed by Malcolm Allison at Crystal Palace where he spent 3 years and played over 120 games for the club also gaining 4 England caps. In 1976 he was transferred to Tottenham for £400,000 and he went to make over 120 appearances for the club until being sold to Leyton Orient in 1980.

In 1986 he became player / manager of non league Dartford where he spent 4 years. He was appointed as the manager of his first club Southend United in 1993 and then over the next 20 years managed a number of clubs including Gillingham, Leicester City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Hull City, Crystal Palace, Wycombe Wanderers and Bradford City.

Peter also had 2 successful spells as the manager of the England Under 21 team. In his first spell his record in competitive matches was played 15, won 11, drawn 3, lost 1 however he was replaced in a controversial manner with Howard Wilkinson being appointed. In his second spell, which he combined with his role as manager of Hull City, his record was played 16, won 9, drawn 5, lost 2. However he left the role when the new senior England manager, Steve McLaren, wanted the Under 21 manager's role to be a full-time position.

In November 2000, whilst managing Leicester City, Peter was appointed caretaker manager of England for one match where he handed the captains armband for the first time to David Beckham and included several young players he knew from his time with the Under 21 team.
